LASIK
LASIK,
or Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis is a refractive procedure
which utilizes the precision of the Excimer laser to reshape the
cornea. Excimer laser correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness,
and astigmatism is the most technologically advanced medical procedure
available today to reduce dependence on glasses and contact lenses.
Numbing
drops are used to anesthetize the eye. A corneal cap is gently lifted
and folded back. The Excimer laser uses a cool ultraviolet beam of
light energy to remove the exact and predetermined amount of corneal
tissue. The end result is a reshaped cornea with the need for glasses
and contacts reduced or eliminated.
LASIK
takes approximately five minutes per eye with the actual laser
treatment time lasting less than thirty seconds. Most patients resume
their regular activities the next day.
