Step Before and After Surgery
A pre-operative dilated eye exam is required for LASIK. Soft and disposable contact lenses should be removed 3 full days prior to the pre-operative examination and surgery. Hard and gas permeable contact lenses must be removed 3 weeks before the pre-operative exam and surgery. If glasses are needed during this period, we will assist with loaner glasses at no charge.
Upon removing hard and gas permeable contact lenses, many patients experience fluctuating vision due to the progressive changes of the shape of the cornea during the 3 week period. The time frame needed for the cornea to stabilize may vary. Only the doctor, after mapping the cornea with the topographer, can determine when your eyes are stable enough to proceed.
After your eye exam, we will make arrangements for your surgery at LaserSite. LaserSite is located at RHD Memorial Hospital at Webbs Chapel and LBJ.
After checking in at LaserSite, you will be asked to lay on a comfortable recliner. Numbing drops and other medicines are placed in your eyes. You should feel no discomfort during this brief procedure.
You will be given instructions for your post-operative care before leaving the center. Should you experience any discomfort, Aspirin or Tylenol may be taken. You will also be given some eye drops for discomfort, if needed. You must have someone drive you to and from LaserSite on the day of your LASIK procedure. We ask that you go home and take a 3 hour nap. This aids in the healing process of your eyes. You will return to our office the next day for a brief post-operative check. Most patients are able to return to work the next day.
